I used a FLIR E5 for PCB troubleshooting. It’s 160x120 and cost me $1249. Switched to the Thor001 with the macro lens, 512x384 for under $600. You can tell right away. I can see a 0.25 millimeter resistor heating up. The E5 never showed that clearly. I found a shorted diode in 20 seconds on a crowded board. For the price and detail, Thor001 is better.

I used to borrow a FLIR One Pro from a coworker whenever I needed to check PCB heat issues, but the image was always too fuzzy for tiny stuff. You could tell something was warm, but not which component exactly.Got the P3 recently and gave it a try on the same kind of job. I was actually able to tell which resistor was heating first, and even saw a thin line of heat leading to a bad cap. I didn’t expect this much detail from a phone thermal camera, but the image is just sharper, no question.

$129 is actually a pretty sweet deal. The image looks clear enough from the video, perfect for getting started. A lot of beginners go straight for FLIR thinking it’s the safe choice — big mistake. The markup on those things is crazy. I’m retired Pd so I know flir. Not worth the money
